A Civil War Soldier in the Wild Cat Regiment: Selections from the Tilton C. Reynolds Papers documents the Civil War experience of Captain Tilton C. Reynolds of the 105th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. The letters describe the regiment's movements, military engagements, and the daily life of soldiers and their views of the war.
Slaves and the Courts, 1740-1860 contains pamphlets and books concerning the difficult and troubling experiences of slaves in the American colonies and the United States. Among the voices heard are those of defendants and plaintiffs as well as those of abolitionists, presidents, politicians, slave owners, fugitive and free territory slaves, and lawyers and judges.
Mr. Lincoln's Virtual Library highlights two collections that illuminate the life of Abraham Lincoln. The Abraham Lincoln Papers contain correspondence and papers accumulated during his presidency. The "We'll Sing to Abe Our Song!" collection includes over 200 compositions that depict Lincoln and the war in popular music. In addition, the Stern Collection contains books, pamphlets, broadsides, prints, maps, drawings, and other memorabilia.
Selected Civil War Photographs: Prints and Photographs Division contains photographs made under the supervision of Mathew B. Brady, and include scenes of military personnel, preparations for battle, and battle after-effects. There are also portraits of Confederate and Union officers, and a selection of enlisted men.Â
Civil War Treasures from the New York Historical Society includes recruiting posters for New York City regiments of volunteers; views documenting the mustering of soldiers and of popular support for the Union; photography showing the war's impact; and drawings and writings by ordinary soldiers on both sides.
Band Music from the Civil War Era gives examples of music that flourished in the 1850s and remained popular through the nineteenth century. Bands of this kind served onboth sides during the Civil War. The collection features compositions, as well as full-score modern editions and recorded examples of brass band music.
Civil War Maps: Geography & Map Division consists of reconnaissance, sketch, coastal, and theater-of-war maps which depict troop activities and fortifications during the Civil War, including maps by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss, a topographical engineer in the Confederate Army, who made detailed maps that used by Generals Lee and Jackson. It also includes maps of General Sherman's military campaigns in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Washington during the Civil War: the Diary of Horatio Nelson Taft, 1861-1865 consists of three manuscript volumes that document daily life in Washington, D. C., through the eyes of patent examiner Horatio Nelson Taft (1806-1888). The diary details events in Washington during the Civil War. Of special interest is his description of Lincoln's assassination, based on the accounts of friends and his son, who was one of the attending physicians at Ford's Theatre the night Lincoln was shot, on April 14, 1865.
