Background Notes

Country Background Notes provide information on geographic entities and international organizations and are updated or revised periodically. They are issued by the U.S. State Department, Bureau of Public Affairs, Office of Electronic Information and Publications.

The Country Background Notes can be found on three different websites dependent on date. Current information found in the Country Background Notes includes:

Current Background Notes (January 20, 2001-present)

The current pages contain country reports released since President George W. Bush took office in January 2001.

The Current Background notes are organized in alphabetical order by the name of the country. The date of issue is included in brackets after the entry. Only the latest report issued since 2001 is available. Access Current Background Notes alphabetically, by region or through special lists. Regions include:

Africa
East Asia and the Pacific
Europe and Eurasia
Near East
South Asia
Western Hemisphere

Region access provides maps and links to the various countries within each region. Also included are "highlights" of key recent government statements, acts or other publications.

Special lists provide access to Independent States in the World as well as Dependencies and Areas of Special Sovereignty. This provides access to the full name of countries or areas.

If you cannot find the name of the country, search the reports issued prior to January 20, 2001.

Background Notes issued 1998 - January 20, 2001

These reports were issued during the Clinton Administration. Background reports issued prior to January 20, 2001 are arranged alphabetically within large geographical areas. No new reports are being added to these areas. You will only find one report for each country in this area.

Background Note Archives (1994-1997)

Older Archives are also available through the Department of State Foreign Affairs Network (DOSFAN). These reports have all been updated, but are may useful for historical purposes. These listed within regions, and then alphabetically within each region by country.
